What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.
The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
Henry's enduring terror of that cave shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
