Time is optimal to change Man Utd's formation - the manager insists.

Manchester United players ahead of a match
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team players to miss the Boxing Day victory against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's tactical system due to public pressure would have been "the end" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his customary three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and opted to field an orthodox back four with two central midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this effectively became a back six in the closing phase as his squad dug in for a win - securing only their second-ever clean sheet of the season.

While he once memorably said that even the highest authority could force him to adjust his approach, Amorim asserts the option to play with alternative setups has always been part of his strategy.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could only make the switch when his team were faring sufficiently well - otherwise it would look as if he was succumbing to outside noise.

"When I arrived here the previous campaign, I realized perhaps I didn't possess the personnel to perform effectively in that system, but it was the beginning of a process," he stated.

"We were trying to build an philosophy. Currently is a different juncture. We are missing a lot of players, and we must adapt, so they understand why we are making changes.

"It is not because of the pressure of the media, or the supporters.

"Whenever you talk about changing the formation repeatedly, I can't change because the squad will think I'm changing because of external voices and I think that is a disaster for the manager.

"When we are playing well in our preferred setup, then is the moment to change.

"We are going to develop into a better side because when all the players return, we are not going to play with a back three in every match."

Availability Issues Loom Large

With only two victories in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to state his team have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a severely stretched squad, with multiple first-team players already confirmed absent for the upcoming fixture against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will rise if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to shake off the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his manager to allow him to make a comeback following his muscle injury.

"Fernandes is already saying he has to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Influence Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be heavily involved, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on offering input.

"He is a leader," he stated. "He must not be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and offering advice. He's always communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has flaws at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he goes to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Players

Although the precise timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, by the end of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
