The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
