The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives shortly after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
