Shock as Popular South African DJ Gunned Down in the City of Johannesburg.
A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by three suspects, one of whom shot at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose behind the incident is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, police said.
The Fatal Incident
Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building close to the Carlton Centre.
He had been present for hours at the property supervising the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, as per local media.
"It is alleged the man was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement stated.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the assault.
Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.
Appeal for Witnesses
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to establish their destination," stated a police chief.
Family and Public Reaction
His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.
"I am devastated. I don't have words," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were willing to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."
She appealed to the public to not sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a South African TV network.
In addition to his media career, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including private security, providing VIP protection services and protecting prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in building administration and was involved in building evictions.

A cabinet official said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's murder.

A public representative stated the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A media executive noted that "Stock was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an lasting impression."
In a communication, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and quick humor, adding that his influence "will be remembered".
