Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
