The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
