British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
