Battlefield 6's Relaxed Game Mode Sparks Heated Discussions Regarding AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but features a few key changes:
- Each team has just 8 human participants, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
- Activities done by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
- Just a pair of locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Elements like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, the playlist delivers on its title: it offers a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides more options for gamers seeking different ways to enjoy the game. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are mad.
Community Responses: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," states a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. At the same time, in community forums, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and another lists all the issues they consider to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title 24/7. Allow them to strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Concerns and Community Input
Despite the support, players have valid points to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it will make queue times even longer for different playlists because of the large amount of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to remove XP farming from the mode. So this new playlist seems like the community meeting them halfway, as per forum feedback. A different user labels this mode as the devs "making a mistake significantly, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and acting on player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist isn't performing to their expectations, they will not hesitate to change it again.
