A high-ranking Russian military figure has been fatally wounded following an blast in Moscow, according to official statements.

The attack happened on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee mentioned that one theory under investigation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Scene of the Attack

Personnel have been sent to the scene, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the city.

Media coverage state the blast occurred in a car park near a residential building.

Pattern of Incidents

Since the beginning of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.

This new event follows other notable incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are never officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The war has witnessed clandestine operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
