A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
