A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
