2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer vision.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
The news echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full text from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a more distinct brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to heart and reimagined the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our audience.
The trust in this project increases every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on next week.
His management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that shift every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can expect further news as development progresses.
